I wanted to subvert the general idea that “design is accurate and system-based, whereas crafts are free-form and handmade.” The 3D data is finely distorted as it is printed, and the shape is even more disrupted as the surface is finished with paint. In the end, I believed that this process would make a work that can be placed somewhere in between machine-generated and handmade artworks.
All the elements that constitute a design, including its theme, shape, and materials, become variables in this project. Only some of the methods, of 3D printing the work using a cornstarch-based filament and finishing it with paint, remain the same while the other elements and materials are added and continuously changed.
The MODEL series is not a single design. It is a formula.
