게자리의 밤
2016년, 국제 빛공해 연구팀은 「Science Advances」에 발표한 “세계 인공 하늘 밝기 지도(World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness)”에서 싱가포르를 세계에서 빛공해가 가장 심각한 도시 국가로 기록했다. 2024년 국제우주정거장(ISS)에서 촬영된 위성 사진 역시 그 관측이 여전히 유효함을 보여준다. 적도의 바다 한가운데 열대의 습한 공기 속에서 형성된 저층 구름은 도시가 내뿜는 빛을 받아 반사한다.
서울 또한 유사한 조건에 놓여 있다. 수도권을 중심으로 한 도시의 인공조명은 밤하늘을 환하게 밝히고, 이곳의 거주자들은 별빛이 사라진 하늘 아래 비슷한 경험을 공유한다. 기후 변화로 인해 여름의 열대야는 더욱 길어지고, 도시는 빛과 열을 품은 채 오래도록 밤에 머문다. 도심의 네온사인과 고층 건물의 불빛, 강변북로를 따라 늘어선 가로등은 서로 다른 리듬으로 점멸하며 우리가 잘 알고 있는 아름다운 밤 풍경을 완성한다.
나는 지금 싱가포르의 선텍시티에 위치한 스타벅스에서 이 글을 쓰고 있다. 내가 주문한 자바칩 프라푸치노는 서울에서 먹던 것과 같은 맛이 난다. 기분 좋게 유지되는 24°C의 공기와 약 3500K 색온도의 따뜻한 빛이 균질하게 채워진 실내에서, 내 앞의 투명한 유리창은 출처를 알 수 없는 도시의 불빛을 다시 반사하며 밤을 밝힌다. 서로 다른 좌표에서 우리는 인공의 빛 아래 뜬 눈으로 같은 밤을 통과하고 있다.
Cancerian Night
In 2016, an international research team on light pollution published the World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness in Science Advances, identifying Singapore as the most light-polluted city-state in the world. Photographs taken from the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024 confirm that this observation still holds true. In the middle of the equatorial sea, low clouds formed in the humid tropical air catch the city’s glow and reflect it.
Seoul is placed under similar conditions. Artificial light across the metropolitan area brightens the night sky, and its residents share the same experience of living beneath a horizon where starlight has disappeared. With climate change, the sweltering summer nights grow longer, and the city remains filled with heat and light. The neon signs of downtown, the glow of high-rise apartments, and the street lamps along Gangbyeonbuk-ro flicker in different rhythms, completing the beautiful nighttime landscape.
I am writing this at a Starbucks in Suntec City, Singapore. The Java Chip Frappuccino I ordered tastes just the same as it did in Seoul. In the room, the air is pleasantly kept at 24 °C, and the warm light of about 3500 K spreads evenly across the space. In front of me, the transparent window reflects city lights of uncertain origin, creating a bright night. From different coordinates, under artificial light, we pass through the same night with open eyes.
