Gwol is a furniture series designed with the motif of sumaksae, the decorative tiles on the roofs of ancient Korean buildings. The shape of the sumaksae is cylindrical and is arranged repeatedly along the end line of the roof, and the center of the cylinder is decorated with various patterns such as flowers, geometric patterns, dragons, and goblin faces in relief form.
The author designed stools and tables using these decorative elements and the architectural structure of Hanok. The body is made of cylindrical stainless steel, and the sculptural decorations are made of granite, a representative stone of Korean architecture. Since it was designed using architectural elements, it was considered to be usable both indoors and outdoors. Later, in collaboration with a Korean wood carving master, sumaksae decorations made of maple wood were added.
A way to further maximize the characteristics of the work is to place the palace in multiple groups rather than as a single structure, giving an image of the roof of a hanok being arranged in a row.
